What’s it about?

Vernice and Annie grew up in Honeysuckle, Louisiana, and have been best friends since they were in the cradle. They have a stronger bond than usual as they are both motherless children. When Vernice heads to Spelman College to continue her education, Annie decides to find her mother and heads to Memphis. These two separate paths put great distance between the two women, but their bond remains strong. Taking place in the Jim Crow South during the civil rights movement, this novel explores a strong female friendship in a particular time and place.

What did it make me think about?

Female friendships.

Should I read it?

Tayari Jones seems effortless in her writing style. Like many character-driven books, this one takes about 100 pages to get going. It is not a page turner, but it does keep you interested. Vernice and Annie take different paths in life, giving Tayari Jones the chance to show us more about the lives of Black women in the South during that time period. I enjoyed this one!

A passage I marked
