What’s it about?
Jane Eyre is raised until the age of ten by a cold and heartless aunt. Her character is evident immediately, even as she is ostracized by the family and eventually sent away. But what will happen to the young Jane Eyre....
What did it make me think about?
Resilience.
Should I read it?
How had I never read this story? Thanks to my family in Utah for encouraging me to pick it up. Now I hope we actually discuss it.... This is an old book, and it was perhaps ahead of its time in depicting a woman as strong, resolute, and independent. The language may be difficult at times, but it certainly was easy enough. The story kept me engaged, and I thoroughly admired Jane. More than anything, I thought this was a great snapshot of a time and place that is unfamiliar to me. You forget how much has changed for both men and women in the last 200 years.
A passage I marked
"Who in the world cares for you? or who will be injured by what you do?
Still indomitable was the reply: I care for myself. The more solitary, the more friendless, the more unsustained I am, the more I will respect myself."
