What’s it about?

When Kesuke Shiraishi's body is found, the Tokyo Metropolitan Police have a murder to solve. When they go to talk to Tatsuro Kuraki, he confesses to not only that murder, but also another unsolved murder from thirty years before. But to Detective Godai and several family members, something seems false.

What did it make me think about?

How complicated lies can become.

Should I read it?

I loved "The Devotion of Suspect X" which was Mr. Higashino's last mystery. I was excited to see this one come out. Much like his earlier book, this novel is not your typical mystery. The author seems to prefer a different template from most whodunit books. I appreciate that. This novel started a little slower, but it picks up steam. I was just as interested in all the Japanese culture that is on display in this story. Just fascinating how the case was handled and the cultural norms of the Japanese criminal justice system. Well worth reading!

A passage I marked

"Truth isn't an easy thing to find, and sometimes in the end it's barely worth finding."
