What’s it about?

When Sharaf and Maryam relocate from war-torn Afghanistan, they have nothing. Years later, when tragedy strikes, they have four children and are living out the American dream. This story is told from a kaleidoscope of perspectives. With all these perspectives, you hear many different “truths”.

What did it make me think about?

Assimilation

Should I read it?

This book started out slowly for me- and at times I felt bogged down by the cacophony of voices. But by using this technique, the author creates versions of this family, each compelling. It was an unusual and effective book that questions our ability to ever really know the truth. How many different versions of a life are there?

A passage I marked

“They gave her freedom because they believed that was how they would keep her from bad ways. And in return she served them water in their own skulls.”
