What’s it about?

This novel takes place in present-day New York City. Graziella is a 96-year-old Italian American who is indispensable to her community. For years, she has made it her mission to keep her working-class neighborhood fed. Her daughter Grace is a well-known Psychology professor who is facing issues in her marriage. And then there is her granddaughter Ella, who doesn't seem to know what to do with her life. When all three end up back at Graziella's home, they may finally have a chance to give each other the grace they deserve.

What did it make me think about?

What a gift it is to be able to give.

Should I read it?

I had a conversation this week about how hard it is to find a "feel-good" book. Well, this fit the bill. It definitely had sad moments, but overall it is a very hopeful novel. I would liken this book to comfort food. It was predictable, easy to read, and left me feeling better about what we can all do to make a difference. If you are in the mood for a quick family saga with a love story thrown in- this should be your next good book.

A passage I marked

" 'You're a good neighbor,' Graziella said. It was the highest compliment she could give anyone other than that they were a good parent. No one thought about neighbors anymore, which darkened her view of the future."
