What’s it about?

Santiago is an old fisherman who is down-on-his-luck.  It has been months since he caught a fish and even the young boy who usually helps him is told to stay away from his bad luck.  He goes out to prove himself and catches a marlin on his line.  It is a huge fish and a major battle ensues.

What did it make me think about?

How long can it take to catch a fish?

Should I read it?

Well, I did appreciate the writing...  Ernest Hemingway created an incredible character in The Old Man.  You could not help but admire his tenacity.  Maybe the whole heroic battle with the Marlin was just too much for me.  I kept thinking, "This is one long fishing story!".  Maybe a sign of the times that my attention span was no match for "The Old Man and the Sea".  Obvioulsy it is a classic and comes highly recommended.

A passage I marked

"He was too simple to wonder where he attained humility.  But he knew he had attained it and he knew it was not disgraceful and it carried no loss of pride."
