What’s it about?
When Louisa is ten-years-old she and her father go for a walk at twilight on the beach. When she wakes up, her father is gone.
What did it make me think about?
Memory, loneliness, grief.
Should I read it?
This was by far and away my favorite novel I have read in a while. And I really liked the last book I read. But this book just had all my favorite characteristics in a novel- the characters drew me in, the story was multi-layered, and there was some psychological suspense. While I did not always like the characters, I was always interested in what was coming next. I must add that I did not enjoy the last novel I read by Susan Choi, "Trust Exercise", even though it was much lauded. If you are like me, do not hesitate to try her latest book. It says a lot that I liked this book enough to want to read whatever she writes next.
A passage I marked
"My God, she remembers this, too: his utter faith in her. No one, least of all her, ever held such faith in her again."
