All the Colors of the Dark

★★★★★★★★★½ 9.5/10

What’s it about?

This novel begins in 1975 and continues on to 2001.  In 1975, Patch and Saint are 13-year-old kids that bond over being outcasts.  When Patch stumbles upon a man attacking his popular schoolmate, Misty Meyer, he intercedes without thinking.  He saves Misty's life, but his life will never be the same- and either will his best friend Saint's.

What did it make me think about?

Love, devotion, friendship.

Should I read it?

First and foremost, if you are one of my friends who does not like to read anything dark then stay away from this one.  If you can take a novel that is tragic, then this is one spectacular story!  Do not let the almost 600 pages scare you away.  The chapters are super short and the book just flies.  This is one of those special books that is a page-turner and yet has incredible characters.  You will hear a lot about Patch and Saint ( who are worth hearing about), but there are so are many other great characters in this story.  The only character that didn't feel fully fleshed out was Sonny- but I will leave that for another discussion. Definitely one of my favorite books of this year!

A passage I marked

"She stole a look at him, his eyes too blue and earnest, like he had never seen anything bad at all.  Right then she longed to look at the world through his lens, certain it was simpler and purer, and easier to see everything good."
