What’s it about?

This novel is set in Kolkata, India, sometime in the future. Ma works for a shelter funded by the local billionaire. She skims just enough to keep her father and her 2-year-old daughter afloat while she waits to join her scientist husband in America. When Boomba, a resident of the shelter, follows her home and steals her purse with the passports, all their plans may be ruined.

What did it make me think about?

Who is the thief and who is the guardian?

Should I read it?

Oh my, this was a sad story. But so worth reading! I enjoyed "A Burning," also by Megha Majumdar, a few years ago, and was eager to read this book as well. Both stories carry a sadness that may be hard for some readers to bear. But this book was well worth the discomfort it may give you.

A passage I marked

"But the needs of others were always smaller than the needs of one's own child."
