What’s it about?

Everett Lindt is seventeen years old and about to begin his senior year of high school. He lives in rural Michigan on a sheep farm. He has always pictured himself continuing the legacy of the Lindt family sheep farms and is confident in his choice. When Mary comes to town, the summer before his senior year, all his future ambitions are questioned. Mary has no intention of living on a farm and aspires to get out of town as soon as she graduates. But what will this mean for Everett?

What did it make me think about?

I was struck by how the characters from the farm interacted with the natural world. I thought the depiction of farm life was one of the more interesting parts of the book.

Should I read it?

This debut novel has some great aspects. I thought the description of farm life, especially as it related to teenagers, was really informative. What a different life they lead, and how much more comfortable they are with all things natural. The romance was a little hard for me. I could not really understand why Everett was so drawn to Mary. But the author does a great job of describing first love, and the plot keeps moving along. This was a solid debut novel, and I am sure many readers will enjoy it.

A passage I marked

"When I walk these fields, I feel generations beside me."
